The
sound effects on this page were recorded in 5.1 surround sound. Please read
these instructions before ordering, thank you.
These sounds are available to buy as Dolby Digital AC3 files, or as "Stem
files". The "Stem files" are 6 individual uncompressed mono WAV
files; one for Front Left, one for Front Right, one for Center, one for Rear
Left, one for Rear Right and finally one for LFE (subwoofer channel). Finally,
the sounds are also available as a "Stereo Downmix", i.e. a version
that's mixed down to a regular Stereo.
The highest fidelity will be achieved by using the 6 Stem Files. These are
uncompressed, 24-bit, 48-khz WAV files; whereas the .AC3 file is compressed
(AC3 is a kind of "mp3 for surround sound").
To use the files on this page, you need certain software and/or equipment.
You can play .AC3 surround audio files using the VLC
media player and a suitable surround speaker system. You can import .AC3
surround audio files into some media production suites like Sony DVD Architect
and others. Please make sure that you're able to use the files you purchase,
before buying and downloading them. You can download a short "Clip"
of each .AC3 audio file below. It's a good idea to test that this short AC3
"preview clip" file works ok with your system, before proceeding to
actually buy the surround files.
You may also want to download this Surround
Test AC3 file.
The sounds presented here are all "soundscapes", rather than individual
one-shot sounds. If you think about it, ambient soundscapes are really the only
type of sounds that even make sense in surround. It doesn't make sense to record
the sound of a tennis racket hitting a tennis ball in surround, because that
is a sound that emanates from a single point, and as such, is best recorded
in mono. Unless, of course, you wish to also capture the "ambiance"
of the tennis arena as the tennis racket sound reverberates throughout the walls
-- then it makes sense to record it in surround.
